How do i get my farms to actually produce food?
As in how do i set it to grow plump helmets
use q (set building tasks or whatever)
and then go to each season and tell it to grow whatever in each season

How do i tell it to grow?
Do i just put the selection on what i want and press esc?

Yay, my fortress is really going good so far.
I'm making some artificial waterfalls now, will update later :D
Attempting to learn how to hook up two windmills to the pumps. It seems difficult.
The waterfalls themselves are done, other than the fact that dorfs are still filling it with water's it's complete.

you need a farmer dwarf
he'll do it automatically if he isn't busy.

I mean how do i designate what plant i want grown?

+ - keys to cycle through the available plants based on seeds.

Oh man, gears/axles and power is  harder than I thought. I'll need way more than two windmills.

You'll want to use axles in place of gears if you can. Axles take 1 power, gears take 5.

But to turn a direction, I have to use gears, right?
I ended up needing 40 power on the Z level of my pumps because of all the axles/gears. I have to manuever them oddly to position it to the gear and pump.

Is all this machinery hoopla necessary in the long run or can I stay a simple fortress?
