My defense currently consists of masses of cage traps in a line. I just caught a bronze colossus after I realized that lowering a bridge on it only destroys the bridge. What should I do with it now that it's caged?

OO, my first siege, how exciting! My marksdwarfs are absolutely tearing them apart.

Haha that was a woeful siege, my dwarfs killed 3 of them and they all bolted

should have put up some better defence before the first seige. By the time my first seige hit, I had a massive area walled off with a moat, 3 bridges with levers to seal myself off if need be, and a stuffload of cage traps. It's only now that i'm training 7 or so marksdwarfs

I have several Bridges going through my fort, The one that seals the fortress completely is up so the Goblins cant get in, I have a 200x200 Wood stockpile completely filled so as long as im self sufficient ill be ok?
I dont really understand the military thow, I have a barracks and ive set all my dwarfs to train so eventually they should become legendary in time?

Well then you should be able to crush a massive chuck of their army just by raising and lowering the bridge over and over.
Yeah they will, but it'll take a loong time. What sort of dwarfs are you training?

My only Sword Dwarf and Legendary Metalcrafter just got killed by a guy who went berserk...
So now im only training Axe and Mace Dwarfs

I don't know how your base is designed, but what i've done is trained 7 crossbow dwarves and posted them in a tower overlooking the only bridge into my base, and they forget stuff up. They train up really quickly, and I use them as hunters as well so they train doing that too.

They probably thought that the siege was a waste of their effort and left.

Anyway, I spend ages this morning finding out what monsters I don't want to meet in adventurer/fortress (using the arena thing).
Got 6 humans and one goblin (goblin under my control) with G.M hammerman and G.M dodger, equipped with iron breastplates, iron greaves and iron mauls. I put that lot up against a single UNSKILLED hydra, and the result:

Two Notable Kills

Human 8 the human
Goblin 1 the goblin (me)

Five Other Kills

Five humans in the Arena

I never want to see a hydra for real. Never.
On the other hand, it did lose 4 necks and bleed to death after I left control mode and unpaused the game.

How do you tell your training squads what to train with? Currently I have a large stock of sword and a slightly smaller pile of warhammers and they seem to prefer gently tapping each other with the hammers. I want a squad of swordsdwarves :(

Starting fort mode as a troop of tasty, tasty Humans. Gonna make an above-ground town of wood and stone, with the only underground features being mines.

It's really cool to be able to embark with above-ground crops like wild strawberry seeds.
