I've heard Shadowmere referred to as male some of the time and female some of the time. I personally believe Shadowmere to be female, as that's how she was first introduced to me by Lucien Lachance.

A mere is also a word for a pond. Considering Shadowmere is presented to the Dragonborn from a shadowy mere, it seems fitting.
Partially related, a mare is also a female horse. Mare sounds like mere.

That settles it; Shadowmere is by no means a male horse.

Oblivion was released five years before Skyrim, and in Oblivion Shadowmere was refered to as a female. Therefore, Shadowmere is a female and any references to the contrary are continuity errors.

I don't put much stock in enchantments, mainly because I'm a crap enchanter. I rely on alchemy. The key to survival lay strewn across the land; you just need to know where to look.
