The classes determine the starting difficulty a lot, also you can grind areas for XP and just get way higher in level than the current area to make it easier. But that isn't as fun as just keep trying til you beat it and get to the next bonfire.
Are the bows stuffty?
Out of curiosity.
And how does the class system work?

Also, would I be missing out if I played it without playing the first?

I didn't pick the hunter class that starts with a bow and I haven't gotten a bow yet, I believe the bows are just for picking off extras in big groups or getting a few first hits on a boss they aren't useable as your sole weapon. The class system basically determines your starting class and starting stats after that you can level your stats any way you want to use any gear so your class only determines how you play in the beginning. I didn't play the first but people say it would be a lot easier to play the 2nd if you played the first since it's the same style and combat system and I believe them because some people claim it's too easy at the start and it wasn't too easy for me.

Dammit.
So much for being a stealthy motherforgeter.

I see.

There is actually a thief class that dual wields daggers and a ring that makes you stealth, so not so much for being a stealthy motherforgeter, very much so for being a stealthy motherforgeter. Also you critical hit if you stab things in the back.

Let me tell you, when people say this game is annoyingly hard, it really is annoyingly hard.

Yea my first char I accidently hit the knight guy by the fire while trying to talk to him and he repeatedly raped me in the ass as I respawned right by him so I eventually just had to make a new guy lol. Also he was trolling me after killing me with lines like "Oh my how embarassing how easily I just beat you right there."

Sweet.

I don't like, nay, I hate the idea of a game that you are just going to be dying the whole time...I like a bit of challenge, but I don't like being ass raped by a game.

I guess you'll hate Super Meat Boy

I wanna play it so bad but I am being nice and letting my grandpa watch his gay ass horse races.

Oh god I've been trying to kill these 2 different bosses and died like 50 times, the worst part is almost every single time they were 1 or 2 hits away from death, to think of how I would've beaten them the first time if I just landed 1 more hit is maddening.

What fun would a game be if it were a challenge to actually try and die?

Honestly, I've waited too long for games like Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

I want this game. I don't think I can wipe off this "CASUAL GAMER" label written on my forehead until I've beaten it, and it looks fun as hell.

I think you just accidently struck gold for a game concept. A flash game that somehow makes it fun and challenging to try and die and you have to figure out how to kill yourself but the game tries to prevent you from doing it!

Also ironically I googled "A video game where you try to die" and Dark Souls was like the 2nd link.
