Hey guise, is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M GPU any good?

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

GeForce GT 540M scores 702.

GeForce GT 140 scores 880.

GeForce GTX 650 scores 1,882.

GeForce GTX 670 scores 5,295.

Conclusion:  its okay, but maybe aim a little higher if you can.

Hey guys, I have a question.

I have the steam linux beta and Intel graphics gard.

BUT (inb4 wrong topic)

I was going to get a Nvidia graphics card for christmas. What do you guys recommend for a Ubuntu 12.04?

I just did some light searching, apparently anything Nvidia brand is good for Ubuntu.

Nvidia's GPUs support hardware decoding of video under linux as well as they do under windows, and have much better driver support than amd. Only go with amd if you use linux as a FOSS system, as nvidia keeps their driver closed-source.

For mid to slightly-above mid level graphics you should be looking at the gtx 550 ti. It is a card that can game if you end up wanting it to at mid-level settings and will do everything else as well as higher end GPUs. If price is the problem then a gt 640 or 620 will suffice.

The GT 140 is simply a rebadged 9600 GT.
There is absolutely no way that the GT 140 is better than the 540m.

GeForce 9600GT scores 926.

Meh, its just testing. Take it with a pinch of salt, you can't rely 100% on these things but they give a pretty good guess.

When you really find a good card its always good to then do specific research into it and get information from a number of sources. I picked the Radeon HD 7770 over a different card, the benchmark results on that website were consistent with other websites and other tests.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that site is not very accurate. My card is a weak Radeon 6750m card, and it scores at 1600, considerably higher than plenty of other nvidia mobility cards.

It's not very accurate. I would use this to figure out which graphics cards to get

It depends what your definition of "weak" is I guess. Nvidia isn't always superior in terms of performance when you compare two cards of similar spec and price, no no.

I'm a po-boy.

the 6870 will do me fine for the games I play often, I don't really plan on running games any higher than 1680x1050 either
does anyone else think these are good/can find better deals? I'm 15 so it's gonna be tough getting $575 (I can't find work todo). might have my parents pay a little for christmas/bday in april

I know absolutely stuff about computers, so I tried my best to get this together.
Budget of about $600, trying to save as much as I can though. I'd be using this thing for gaming, of course.

Could anyone give any tips on how to save some cash without sacrificing power, parts to change, etc.?

Also, if I get a new motherboard and cpu, do I have to buy windows 7 again or just plug my harddrive with windows on it into the new board and it still work?

The Windows installation will not run if the motherboard is changed.

You can reinstall it.

If you don't have an installer or key anymore, but you have a laptop or retail desktop, you can use the key from it (usually stickered on the underside) and legally download the installer DVD from the Microsoft website.

the 6870 performs better than a 7750, it's a lowend card like the 6670 which I have now, but my 4850 did better than the 6670.
i'm not quite sure why they made those cards low end

Lol please

If you think that is what a low-end card is, then you've been spoiled. You've obviously never had to have a "ghetto" graphics card.

I was trying to say the 7750 is a slower card than a 6670 (which I got for 90$, not bad), and a 6670 is slower than a 4850 (from my experience) in gaming. I wasn't saying they were super slow, just saying not as fast as a 4850/6870

I'm using a 6670 that plays gtaiv pretty good but not as good as my 4850 did

How noticeable would the difference between the 6770 and the 7750 be? If it's worth it, I think I could bump of an extra 20, but I'm tight a on cash. Really tight.
