i won a raffle and i'm getting a macbook pro 13" :D
sell it and buy parts for a high end desktop

Can anyone suggest parts for a good PC $600 or under?
want to go with amd or intel as a processor

You might want to go for an i7
Why? I am not planning on overclocking the machine.

I'm not exactly sure but the i7 might work better with the 680 than the i5.

Hmmmm :/

The 3570k will not throttle the 680. A 3570k is pretty much the minimum processor required for any high end video cards without bottlenecking.

OK...but I am a little hesitant.

AMD processors are cheap but sort of unreliable.
Intel processors are expensive and reliable.

Just made my first computer upgrade, adding 8gb of RAM to make it 12gb. I know I will never need that much, but 4gb was to little so I bought a combo of 2x4.
I also know RAM is the easiest thing to install, but I feel so proud. :D

Gonna go with Intel
Just my two cents, but if you're on a budget (and with only $600 I'd say you are) I'd suggest AMD. I'm currently running an AMD Phenom + AMD Radeon 6770 and it works really well and was cheap to. I'm no computer expert though. AMD has been better in my eyes ever since their drivers were sorted out. :P
If I was to make a comparison I'd say AMD is like homemade cooking and Intel is like fancy restaurant food. xD

building a computer right now
i put the cpu in
it seems to be put in correctly (the little notches on the sides of the cpu have been filled by the motherboard's cpu notches so that's why i think it's right)

when i close the little cover and try to lower the arm, it's resisting
i feel like if i push the arm harder something's gonna break
is it supposed to resist like this
EDIT: there's a plastic cover thing inside the door. am i supposed to have removed that

picture please? what do you mean by plastic thing?

the plastic cover. i read the label on it and it said to remove it after installing the processor so i did that after posting.
but it's still really tense. i googled "cpu tension arm" and i got a bunch of people saying they had the same problem but it worked fine. still need more assurance.

If you removed the plate that says remove before installing, then everything should be good. The retention arm takes a lot of force, like so much it feels like its gonna snap

ok. my google searches/frantic messaging has returned nothing but positive
i'm taking the leap

Yeah that little arm doesn't feel like it can take the pressure, but it can.

I've read lot's of places that first time builders experience the retention arm to be quite hard. That's normal, apparently. Mine was hard as well. You might even hear a small cracking noise.

You could try using one of those services where you get a US address at a warehouse and they send it to you but.

> extra shipping cost
> handling cost
> may have to pay tax when it arrives in your country

In New Zealand I have to pay on average $30-50+ per component. Turns out if I ship from Newegg using a system like that I'm paying more or the same anyway. It balances out.
What if one or more of the component are faulty? You would have to send it back to the US for 100$ each. Not worth it at all.
