just because it's supposed to be fiction doesn't mean that there isn't something similar
it wouldn't make life any more interesting, because we wouldn't even know about it
the articles almost always mention some sort of suppression of any witnesses, and I've never seen them say that it actually has been marketed

If it were real then we would all know about a giant lizard that can't be destroyed periodically breaking from some mysterious facility and then everyone would realize that it's real, and a real life Weeping Angel that can break your neck in less than the time it takes you to blink.

But nothing like that has ever happened.
