Author Topic: My Annoyance/Confusion at Human Revolution (Minor Spoilers but not Really)  (Read 2497 times)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was a great game. But it shouldn't have been a Deus Ex game. Because the entire storyline makes NO SENSE ever since HR was released.

To clear some things up: HR is the prequel to the first game. But it's not immediately before like some people think oddly enough. HR is set in 2027. Deus Ex is set in 2052, a good 25 years later. Invisible War is set in 2072, 50 years after HR and 20 years after Deus Ex.

First thing: the flying-laser-ultra-jet-with-plasma-trails. It's apparently called a VTOL.

Nice and futuristic, huh? That's how Sarif Industries top security gets around.

But in Deus Ex, as part of an elite military branch called UNATCO, soldiers get around in this thing:

But you are a special agent, so you get this one:

So bioengineering security guards get more high-tech vehicles than a well-funded government organization that fights terrorists 25 years after the VTOL was used.

It seems technology devolved. But 50 years after the VTOL was created? Oh they must use something different by then. Nope:

WHAT HAPPENED. Well, besides economic collapse and all that, but still, they used helicopters up to 50 years after a near-spaceship was created for PERSONAL USE.

Next up: Bob Page, the Vampire.

25 years earlier:

He aged about three years in 25. And to fully support the vampire theory, he has red eyes, a secret lair, lives underground, and makes his henchmen dress in black.

Ending scene.

Imagine this.

After the ending fight.

You are shown into a room.

It has four buttons.

THE ENDING YOU GET IS BASED ON THE BUTTON YOU PRESSED. Not your actions in the game. But whatever button you felt like pressing. Plus the endings had the same basics as in Deus Ex.

SPOILERS
       HR Ending                                Deus Ex Ending
Side with Illuminati = Join Illuminati in a Shadow Government
Side with Darrow =  Technological Dark Age
Kill Self (Screw It) =  Merge with Helios to Give People the Choice

Then they added the Sarif ending which was basically a reskinned Helios ending.

End conspiracy web for Deus Ex with HR plotline added: Hugh Darrow is the internet, the world is too close to the sun, and JC Denton is the world's biggest voting booth.

My theory on the whole VTOL-Helicopter thing is that VTOL's kinda fell out of style due to safety ratings or the like.

Doesn't Bob Page have the same augmentations as JC?  I recall that they weren't invented in HR, but that probably is why he didn't visibly age.  And for the VTOL, remember, Human Revolution is Cyberpunk in 2010 while the other two were around 2000.  The ending button machine was bullstuff though.

I thought vampires don't age or something.

I thought vampires don't age or something.

And Bob Page really didn't, just some wrinkles that were there because of the graphics at that time.

You're thinking of Walter Simons, and while possible that Page had augmentations he had visible concerns about aging. Remember he had a clone with his DNA and tried to merge himself with Helios to give him eternal dominance but he mainly just didn't want to get old and die. Remember, JC looked older in Invisible War and had himself a monkish beard.

I really don't care about those plotholes. Give me the vtol over the crappy military plane.

Human Revolution 2 please.

well it bugs me that R2-D2 forgot how to fly about 18-20 years later

They had a better engine in the most recent game, so they made things look like something other than stuff.

The VTOL requires fuel, but the black helicopters run on electricity. Considering that in 2052, fossil fuels would be pretty much gone, it makes sense.
