Author Topic: Blockland on Torque 3D (Yes again)  (Read 3505 times)

This has been proposed by a couple of users (mostly me). I feel that Blockland should get re-coded on GarageGame's new Torque engine in the near future, right now I think Blockland is at a very good state. First off, Blockland has many limits due to the current game engine such as, Datablock limits, brick limits, and memory limits (both for hosting and 32/64bit support).

Besides the limits to Blockland things like physics and rendering can be revamped with the new engine. Physics right now are currently client-sided, meaning we can't interact with the bricks after they get fakekilled. The Rendering right now does support dynamic lighting but only with the remove of terrain.

Here are some major advances Torque 3D offers:

Rendering

*Per-pixel dynamic lighting

*Reflections

*Scattersky system for sun, stars and skies

*Extensible shaders (GLSL / HLSL) (Ambient Occlusion shadows and also shadows that will be in v21)

*Screen Space Ambient Occlusion

*Lens Flare/Corona Effects

*Powerful fire, smoke, and explosions particle systems

Physics

*Actual Physics with PhysX (No crappy client-sided physics) (PhysX is not required but it comes with Torque 3D, other 3rd party physics libraries are supported)

*Physics support for older hardware and mac

*Cloth dynamics (imagine moving hanged shirts moving)

*Destructible Objects and Joints

*Buoyancy (YESS!)

There are many more features in Torque 3D, I am simply displaying the physical features
(I did not go over lighting). The many more features included, and are more for the programmer (Badspot).
You can see more features here http://www.garagegames.com/products

so basically make it run worse on poor computers that it runs ok on with a bunch of graphical stuff

i love that idea

This is actually false :cookieMonster:

If you read it I wrote how the engine supports physics for older hardware. Plus, why should we all have old and downgraded stuff all because your computer isnt good.

Well they made packet sending better for people with low latency

this has been made clear
SO MANY TIMES
IT IS NOT
GOING
TO HAPPEN.

I can still dream can't I?

I can still dream can't I?

You can dream, doesn't make it any closer to reality, though.

The only way i'd see this happen would be if they made a Blockland-II. (Like it would happen /sarcasm)

I just can't picture Blockland being all super improved and whatnot, it just seems like one of those games that is best as a simple and easy to run game

Legos in the world of Crysis.
Yeah just doesn't seem very fitting.  Why are you so set on blockland including super-detailed environments?  It just seems to ruin the whole point of Blockland.

Reality check:  I worked for garage games for a year.  Kompressor was the Torque technologies director for like 5 years.  We both think "upgrading" to Torque3D is a bad idea.

Exactly what i was thinking.

I mean YAY cloth physics! For who?
It would look silly on blockheads...

The visual style of Blockland is good as it will become (saying that because of the lighting update) and shouldn't be all like real life or anything close.
The blocko style is what makes Blockland. (Obviously)
All the graphical potential you just listed would/could never be used in a right way.

And well yeah, Port's quote explains a lot too.
They have done their research already and they know what it is and what they could do.

Tl;Dr
Nope.
