europe created an empire like everyone before them, romans, chinese, arabs, all of them created empires. Europeans took over america and lost it, just like everyone before them. the difference was there were no barbarians to forget them up anymore, so they weren't destroyed after a defeat. we've now created a society that can last much longer than old city states because we basically have no more barbarians capable of loving our stuff, and we also don't really forget with russia anymore.
