Author Topic: Marching band: should it be considered a sport??  (Read 5005 times)

Taking stuffs, climbing stairs, and laughing too hard don't have organized competitions and tournaments you loving dense handicap.
marching band doesn't have set rules, doesn't require any physical talent other than the ability to play an instrument (which is musical talent) or march (which anyone with half a brain can do). training for something doesn't make it a sport, i can train to play guitar hero or train to juggle. Just because something has tournaments does not mean it's a sport, there are tournaments for just about anything, from poker to playing pool. something isn't a sport just because you want it do be, get that through your dense head.

What if I don't think football is a sport?
then you'd be wrong.

What if I don't think football is a sport?
you're entitled to your opinion.
many people dont think cheerleading is a sport, but that again is their opinion

Are you saying that holding a ball and running requires intellectual ability?

Are you saying that holding a ball and running requires intellectual ability?
did i ever say sports needed intellectual ability? no i said they needed physical skill. holding a ball and running while dodging other people trying to tackle you, while knowing the right time to throw the ball, hold it, rush, dodge, ect are all things you need to know when playing football and most other sports. you have to memorize a music sheet and memorize a walking pattern, then repeat those two things. with your logic being in a play would be a sport because i have to memorize lines and movements.

Anyone who thinks it isn't a sport has obviously not been in marching band. It's competetive, requires skill,  requires teamwork, and just generally has every aspect that other sports have. There are tournaments.. Also, if you think marching is less physically exerting than football or any other kind of sport than involves hard work physically, again you have never been in marching band.
lol...
marching doesn't take half the physical work as football.

Yeah but you can't be stupid to be in marching band.

TIL blockland doesn't know what marching band is

Yeah but you can't be stupid to be in marching band.
So how does it requiring you to be smart make it a sport? You're just going in circles here.

No, being part of a band is not a sport and marching doesn't change that.

Just thought I'd leave this here.

Yeah, while you're at that I'm going to listen to some basketball players talk to me about space exploration.
Medical professionals aren't exactly experts in the world of sports; and besides, physical exertion doesn't make something a sport, because I feel all those things after splitting firewood over the winter and that isn't a sport.

No. A marching band is some men marching about and playing bass music. A sport is a game which has competitive action and an ultimate winner at the end. This is not marching bands.

Based on every sport I have heard of, they must have a quantitative, objective scoring system. The scoring system in things like marching bands or dancing are qualitative and subjective. Also, in sports the main goal is achieved through physical prowess. While you may need to be physically fit to be in a marching band, your main goal is achieved through musical talent.

No, it's not a sport.  Yes, it's demanding and it's competitive.  But you're not marching and blasting music into each other's faces as opposed to football, basketball, or soccer where there is direct contact involved.  It's not a sport on account of the fact that you don't directly contact opposing "players".  But it's just not a sport as we see "sports" in comparison to football, soccer, etc.

Before you fire off going "omgf u retad", I did say that YES, it is PHYSICALLY DEMANDING.  My school's marching band is pretty great and they're very competitive, and lots of guys in it tell me that it's no walk in the park.
