Author Topic: RTB save file submissions -OR- make more public builds and designs  (Read 9882 times)

Prop packs? You get saves filled with props that you can dupe around and stuff?

If this happens I'm making anything worth anyone's time I ever made public.

Would also be nice if it'd be possible to add 'required add-ons' much like the current RTB add-ons -if that hasn't been said yet-.

Yes, that would be nice. Maybe it would be even nicer if the colourset could be extracted from the save. That way, we wouldn't have to worry about the colours. But that would probably require the build to be selected before hosting.

At the moment it also works out what colorset you should download in order for the save to look correct, as well as what add-ons you'll need in terms of custom bricks, vehicles, lights or items etc. and lists them alongside the save file too.

Mentioned on the first page - I said a lot of things so I can't blame you guys for missing it :)

This is automatic by the way so it should be able to pick up any add-ons used in the save file and list them, provided they're default add-ons or hosted on RTB.

Oh god that would be so great to be able to use in singleplayer too.
Some of my larger builds have a really specific add-on set (maybe a bit too specific for uplaoding) and I always think I forgot to enable this or that event or light and that would completely mess up the save.

I think that makes sense, yeah. There are a couple of solutions to this problem. The first is that anything that gets a negative rating from too many users would be removed or hidden from the system because we'd assume that it's just really bad quality and nobody wants to see it.

What we could also do is make it so that the moderators get a list of all the newly submitted files whenever they login and they can then check those and remove any that are inappropriate or just awful.

Do you think that'd solve the problem of it becoming a dump?

I actually do not believe in the rating system as a moderation option. It's like giving power to normal users, which I do not like as they can be dumb, clueless, biased, full of hatred or anything similar. The rating system could work as a popularity check but I, myself, would not like it to have so much power. People can randomly rate down everything they see or maybe even rate up stuff and inappropriate content. You can not trust the community.

I withdraw my queue idea and rather point at your second solution.
New submission should be made available immediately and moderators receive a message about it on login where they choose to remove it/tell the creator to change it or just let it be. That way we avoid bottlenecks.

The only issue I've got with props (and builds actually) is how to load them into the game. In an ideal situation you'd be able to hit the "load" button on the in-game save browser and it'd equip your player with a special brick which would be a square with the exact dimensions of the build you're trying to load to make it a bit easier to position and everything. Obviously that's not possible at the moment but I might pitch the idea to Badspot and see how keen he is on adding some kind of system to do that. If anyone else has got some ideas about how to place builds you're loading when you're not exactly sure about it's dimensions then definitely discuss them in this thread.

What what is wrong with just downloading a .bls file and loading it duplicator style?
Or duplorcator style too.

Unless this is something that is being handled completely client sided...
I worked out duplication saving/loading in buildbot if using that or something similar is acceptable to you.
Or you could even make it create a macro, although buildbot is sorta the same thing, except faster.

Heck, I could probably put together some basic client sided prop downloading and loading pretty quick if I can get a server to host the stuff.

I agree with that to an extent but obviously the ratings would be done in such a way that it'd take proper coordination between a lot of people to get inappropriate content to the top - and even then a moderator could just revoke the rating privileges of all involved and reset that submission's rating. I think that rating as a tool for ridding the system of bad submissions is worth the potential for users to try and abuse it for really little gain.

I've not really thought too hard about whether it'd be clientside or serverside. I see a few benefits and drawbacks to both. The idea of having to send the build to the server to load sounds kind of lame but at the same time so does the client making the server have to download the build from RTB - though the latter would be quicker. Ideally I'd like to load it in such a way that doesn't rely on the server having a particular add-on, though.

I think this would do awesome.
Just risking people submitting stupid builds like massive snakees and for stuffs and giggles people keep upvoting it to see the giant snake get to the top list.

Also, maybe instead of just only a tag system but a category system, like add-ons.
Like "Cities" or "Single Buildings" or "Terrain"

it was determined that tags are better than categories. what if you have a city that includes terrain. what if it's a single build that is a piece of a city

I'm really glad this is getting some serious discussion

Yeah but like I said - moderators would be able to tackle that pretty quickly. I can't see it being something users would struggle with on a daily basis.

I think some sort of loose category system which can then be sorted or filtered by tags would work quite well.

Having categories could work if you choose the right topics.
Builds are often based on themes and often follows one theme.

Categories like cities, terrain, skyscraper, forest won't do good.

But, categories like Medieval, Sci-fi, World-war II, Middle east could work.

well It would be able to go in both categories.

Clearly categories are going to require some careful thought. There's so many ways you can go with it and there are so many obscure build themes that just wouldn't fit unless categories were heavily generalized into things like "Urban" or "Outdoor" or things along those lines. I still think the categories Sleven suggested are too specific tbh.

Have a basic set of catergories which the player can choose to set it when submitting. Have one of those catergories be "other". If a large amoun of builds go into other with a general theme make that theme a catergory and move the builds there.
