Author Topic: Map Image Options  (Read 1398 times)

When you join a server, all you see when you load is the default "Unknown Map" image.

My suggestion is an option for the host of a server to change that preview image to a screenshot from their screenshot folder so players can get a feel for what the server may be about.

I'm really sick of seeing that "Unknown Map" thing.

And what if somebody uses a different aspect ratio than you do?

Couldn't it be worked to fit your screen? Sure, that may make it look stretched, but anythings better than nothing.

And what's keeping somebody from using research as their map image?

Here's what people don't think about to Offtin it's still a revision aka not v21
So it may be default

the same thing that's keeping them from doing it now: nothing

That's nice and all, but I'm talking about a server side so joining players can see the server as they load it.

oh
not happening
the image is client sided so you can't really do poop about it

Then it should be reworked to be that way..

If it showed the server preview image (like on the blockland.us server list), that'd be neat.

I find it would work best if it worked the way old maps did. The preview image would now show the gamemodes preview image. So if some one was hosting a "pushbroom tdm" gamemode it would show the bushbroom gamemodes preview image.

What about periodically rendering screenshots from the perspective of individual players, and keeping a few of those on hand at a time for sending to connecting clients, and showing them in slideshow format. Like some games where the installer shows you assorted screenshots while it works.

Unfortunately there's no way to script this - would require engine changes, pretty heavy ones for dedicated servers that don't normally have to load any graphics or rendering stuff.

I just want a way to display the build that the player is loading as they load it.

Having it read from selected screenshots would be the best bet.

Might I suggest the pixelated preview image from the blockland website?

That would be nice, but Id like the freedom to use angles, perspectives, and placement to effectively show off the loading preview.

However, anything would be better than a static, one image for everything, preview.
