Since i'm going to stay with 1080p gaming for atleast a couple of more years, would I be better off just getting a 970 or would I be better to just wait until aftermarket cards come down to the actual MSRP for the 1070?

I would've gone higher, but I didn't want to spend too much on the graphics card alone. I was primarily upgrading my RAM, Processor, and Motherboard, and decided to add a new graphics card because the old one had started giving me trouble on some new games.

the 4GB version 480 is cheaper and performs better than the 380X, so returning your 380X and getting an aftermarket 480 won't be a bad idea

also, is it just me or does GTA V take a god damn supercomputer to run with max settings at 1440p (with Nvidia PCSS+ enabled)? I drop below 50FPS sometimes even with a GTX 1080!

is it me or can I run anything at 720p at medium settings with 30 fps because I have a gtx 640 and I don't feel the urge to play at top settings

that's a shame, just run it at partial medium/high settings. My AMD x4 860k/960 build has some things set to medium and others set to high and I get a decent 45-60 FPS.
