I have an AMD Phenom II x4 3.2 GHz processor that is cooled by one of these. Could I safely overclock to 4.0 Ghz? I've already overclocked to 3.6Ghz with no issues.

Yes, you can, just monitor your temperatures through an application like SpeedFan, CPUID HWmonitor or Open Hardware Monitor. Get Prime95 and do a torture test on your processor and see how hot the processor gets at 100% usage. If it's under 90C, you'll be ok.

ALRIGHT, LISTEN UP, I GOT A PROBLEM AND IT'S PISSING ME OFF

So recently, I built a new computer, and it worked fine for the first few weeks or so. Then, it started freezing. Not random freezes, mind you. It developed an oddly specific habit of freezing anywhere between 2-5 minutes after startup. I have Windows 7 Professional and an AMD Phenom II x4, but I can hardly imagine the processor freezing because of the strain of running windows. When it freezes, the mouse can move for a few seconds, then that freezes too, and the numlock key won't work while it's frozen, indicating a CPU issue.

Sometimes I'll get lucky and it will live past those initial 5 minutes and run with no problem forever. I'm using the stock cooler, but no overclocking involved, and the CPU idles at 39 degrees and never gets to any sort of dangerous heat level, and it never goes past 75% load.

Has anyone ever dealt with this stuffballs annoying issue or one similar?
I get this issue when I'm using Windows XP or any Debian-oriented Linux distro, it's got something to do with memory exceptions, meaning you probably got a faulty RAM stick, or a driver is causing memory exceptions. Uninstall any recently installed drivers. If that doesn't fix it, run Memtest86+ or the Windows Memory Diagnostics if possible.

Go for it then, should handle those games fine, and seeing you have an E5800 that's an overclockable CPU. An easy 4GHz if you have decent cooling.

i have a stock cooler...

how much are those? i have 30 bucks left.

my friend has one of those and he can play far cry 3 and battlefield 3 on medium. with settings lowered.

is it quiet? or one of those ones that sounds like someone threw stuff in a fan?

yes why not, and yeah. Thermal paste is included, but you have to put it on yourself.
