I honestly can't fathom why you would ever accuse someone of lying about their friend's death. If they're telling the truth, you're a horrible person. If they're lying, it doesn't hurt you, and you're a terrible person.

Obviously he, for whatever reason, did not value it high enough to keep living it. Someone destroying something that belongs to someone else is a reason to be sad. Someone (intentionally) destroying his own belonging is not, although it is obviously not a reason to be happy either.
