though i'm sure you misworded it, the canon races are exactly as "unoriginal" as the submitted races.

I was referring to the canon races too. I suppose its just starbound's thing to have races based on earth animals...

Grays, Martians and variations of aliens with numerous tentacles and eyes.

Mass Effect did a pretty good job of making Aliens not clearly based on any sort of specific Earth Creature. (Except the Asari which make no sense in my head)

The only three that are highly humanoid are the Asari, Quarians and arguably the Drell

the Batarians, Vorcha, Volus, Hanar, Turians, Geth, Krogans, Elcor and Salarians aren't very humanoid at all.

From a scientific viewpoint, a lot of intelligent life would be bipedal, humanoid tool users. Sorry.

Iunno what the problem is, every alien race ever is based on human cultures and stuff because, well... humans can't really write something inhuman well.
