Author Topic: Blockland mod market system?  (Read 15649 times)

Free is the enemy of quality. If we want quality mods, we need them to cost money. There will still be our medicore addons (no offence to the scripters :p) for free
So you're saying that people don't make quality mods if you don't get payed for it? Do you even loving browse the addons section?

Name one person who is willing to spend 7+ hours a day developing something for free, while having an income of
0$.
...Almost every scripter and addon maker ever?

Are you kidding? Do you realise that you need cash to buy food, water, a home, etc.?

Yes I do browse the action section, don't get me wrong there is some cool stuff, but there isn't proffesional grade addons there. You can't expect that, because the developers are working for free, and giving away a free product. Think about how much more they would be motivated if they gained money for their creations.

if nobody made nice mods because its free, then explain the free nice mods like rtb?

also there are some great video games out there that are free

It will never be added. Modders can still make quality add-ons for free. Heck, if i could code, I would try to make my add-ons the best thing I ever made.

I'd rather not pay +$200 for the addons I like.

Also,
FUN FACT:
I have 2033 addons.
If each addon was $1, I'd have to pay $2033.

So no thanks.

There's a difference between buying for things you literally need and addons in a video game. People don't need money for motivation, hell, look at brian smith and truce and port and other people. they work for months or maybe even years on amazing addons that people don't pay for.

You clearly have no idea what the OP means and should reread.

When I was talking about buying for things you need, I  was talking about people making a living while developing. If they are able to make a living and make us addons, then they can have more time making addons instead of having to go to work, go home, work in the few hours of free time they have, etc.

Its true that money isn't the only motivater, but its a pretty good one.

Yes there are free games, but the best  games cost money (Starcraft 2, Black ops, Minecraft, Blockland, + Hundreds of more examples).
Things don't have to cost money, but if you want the best your most likely going to have to pay. We are seriously lacking mods that will only come through paying cash. I wonder how much Blocklands community would grow if there were more neat additions to the game.

Thanks for the support Shell, and the good arguements =].

On one last sidenote, remember, if most people can make something it probley wont cost money (I.E., simple addons such as server vote), but addons that not everyone has the time, skills, motivation and so forth to make (such as Iban's ZAPT, RTB, Iban's City Rpg that never was released Greek's Slayer) would be the things that cost money, and rightly so. They are bringing us nice things for our enjoyment.

Bro. You're talking about developing serious games which of course cost money to make and therefore cost money to get. Addons cost no money to make and people are 100% fine with not getting payed for it. Also, no one would buy the addons if they cost money. Trust me, at most, they would get 4 sales.

I have spent hours at a time on mods that I never even tell people about.
You should really consider just donating to the developers instead of making everyone pay for it lol.

Guess what, It doesn't cost money to make software aside from paying developers to make the software. Do you think Microsoft would have Windows 8, if it didn't cost money? No way. Your saying that just because there are these free addons, there is no potential for many new addons that are amazing. What are you basing your arguments off of, saying that at most people will get 4 sales? I'm basing my arguments off of other games that I have seen.

Tell you what, if people notice that there is a way to make money and they have the skills to do so, they will. Its called the free market.
Your idea that people wouldn't create better things for us is completely illogical.

Would you be more motivated if 1,000 people were willing to pay you 1$ for your addons? Would you release them, and make higher quality stuff? (remember were under the pretense that no one can pirate the addons that are sold.)

Your argument is based around money but it's loving stupid because NONE OF THE ADD-ON MAKERS IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE BITCHING ABOUT HOW POOR THEY ARE.

No one is doing it as a loving job. The only one who should be getting paid is Badspot because he made the loving game. forget anyone who thinks their mod should be entitled to earn any money.

Money as a motivation promotes bad practice. Our add-on makers don't do it for money they do it because they want to make something FUN.

Do you seriously think Badspot woke up one morning and thought to himself "well stuff I sure am poor, time to make a game about building with loving legos"?? NO!

Uh yeah no ones doing it for money because there is no good system in place. I guess you missed the part in my Original post about Badspot working out a deal with the developers(If they even legaly have to)? Money as a motivation promotes bad practice? lol? I guess motivating people to work for a job is bad? Even communists know that people need money in order to work.

Yes, people are doing it for fun. And yes, we would have more fun stuff if people earned money while making the fun stuff.
So your saying, screw any one that thinks they should be paid for their intellectual property? Thats a joke man.

SpreadsPlague, I think the dumbest thing you said was about badspot making a game because he was poor. Guess what, people make things for money, often times because they have to. (And yes, people make things for free as well) Whether or not he wanted to make Blockland( which I'm sure he did), he needs a way to support him self and had to make money off of blockland (Unless of course there are unseen variables such as him having a girlfriend, family, wife, who ever that could support him...)

Most garbage men don't go to work and say "I sure do love collecting peoples trash, I'm going to go and enjoy my self today! Screw money!". They need a serious motivation to go collect garbage.

I think what you don't understand is, we would still have free addons but we would also have addons people would make for the sole purpose of making money, that we would never get if people weren't going to make $$ off of.
