Author Topic: "who are you???"  (Read 5155 times)

I figured this was more relevant in drama than off-topic
anyway
all the time I'm seeing people here (and not just here, it happens everywhere else, I'm sure) get insulted or whatever, and then ask the person who insulted them "who are you?"
because it totally matters whether or not you know them
for example, you don't need to know me in order for me to think you're an idiot
it is seriously stupid to say
and then, they don't even respond to the actual insult
like the fact that you don't know them means what they said is automatically irrelevant

Funny thing is, they probably do know who they are. They just don't have anything else to say.

Strongly agree. It's an especially annoying form of ad hominem.

lol its funny because this topic is a rant about using a certain type of ad hominem in response to ad hominem itself

Not always. Sometimes people will make a legitimate point about a server (or add-on or whatever) and be shot down 'cause the speaker apparently doesn't know them.

You have a point, though.

It sometimes makes sense though. If I was in a scripting topic arguing about scripting with a bunch of scripters and some person that was not a well-known scripter tried to tell us we were all wrong it might be fitting.

But that's less-used then this type of "who are you???"

I would say a "who are you" that is reasonable is used a significant minority of the time. But, yes, the majority of the time it is stupid and annoying.

"who are you" would still be far from the appropriate response
in that case, you would ask them to explain
someone not being well-known for something doesn't mean they're no good at it
if it's nonsense, or whatever, then adjust your response fittingly, but even then, asking them who they are would still be stupid

I agree, and people who say it are just mostly trying to insult them, as if it means anything that they don't know them lol.

Okay not the best example, but there are situations where someone's "known-ness" directly correlates with their weight in an argument.
