Author Topic: Linux Distro Choosing: Getting a CD Tommorow, Yes!  (Read 11954 times)

A final thing, you're always going to need the option to boot back into your previous OS, so keep it on its own partition. Also, do NOT delete the partition you're trying out your distro on until you're doing it while installing another. It's likely you'll have GRUB installed on it, and you don't want that breaking so you can't boot into your previous OS even if it does still exist on your system.
So much this oh my goodness. Only about 80 or so MB is needed, and it's even less if you're using something like ext2, ext3, or JFS as a filesystem.

Think of this when choosing a distro: how long do you want to spend setting it up?

If you don't want any trouble and the most support, Ubuntu (or one of its variants) is probably best, or maybe Mint or Fedora, though I have never used those.  If you want to really learn about Linux, maybe do Arch, though I really don't recommend it for your first distro.  Don't use Gentoo for your first, or maybe ever.  It's a slippery slope.  :cookieMonster:

Get Slackware, if it's too hard to configure (even though its lods e fun) get Arch Linux, if you are a scared-of-command-line-thingies pusillanimous individual then get ubuntu \o/

Even using Ubuntu you get a fair share of using the Terminal. It's pretty much a Linux standard.

I only got linux because I love the terminal so damn much

I think the Terminal is kind of cool too, but I don't know where I can learn the basics and how to use it :/

What is the benefit of using Linux over Windows? I use Windows 8. I don't code or mess with the appearance of my OS. I've used Ubuntu temporally in the past and it looked like a brown Windows. Icons and a start bar, nothing too different except the placement of my files.

People like to think that they're better than others because they know how to use a terminal ;)

Linux is customizable, open-sourced, and it's more challenging to use, and because windows is for plebs.

because it doesn't randomly stuff itself, and it's generally faster.

I learned command by command through the man pages that are included. Use "man command" to look at them.
Anytime I'd see a command referred to online, I'd go check the man pages. The only one I didn't do it for was cat.

NSA probably doesn't have a backdoor on every Linux distro

My laptop has never crashed. Never. No errors, no blue screens. It's current up time right now is 186 hours. I've had it for half a year.  As for speed, this machine does not lag when loading chrome, watching videos (with VLC), viewing pictures (with IfranViewer), or opening files (Windows Explorer). It obviously lags when gaming because it's a laptop and has Intel HD 3000. I haven't customized the desktop with anything except the taskbar's color which is default to 8. Blockland loads relativity fast even with a 5200RPM HDD. I don't know why people hate on Windows 8, the search function is so much faster than 7 it's laughable.
What is the benefit to a normal computer user?
