Author Topic: HamHost Dedicated Blockland servers | New poll: More free-user features?  (Read 113808 times)

Why does Lub buy big servers with 32 GB RAM, although he doesn't use half of it? To show off?

Simply because we want to offer a high quality service whilst maintaining high capacity per physical server. 50 Blockland servers (roughly our capacity per node) can potentially use a lot of RAM and I'd much rather have a lot of wasted RAM than run out of RAM. Whilst we were at it we thought we might as well just get some of the best processors and SSDs anyway, quality can't hurt ;)

You server hosts and your fancy server specs...

Whenever I host a dedicated server I just use an old Windows XP with 512 mb of RAM.

Exactly. Always budget more than you think you'll ever need, as you might actually need it, for example several servers could get very popular and have lot of players on each one, which increases the overall RAM and CPU usage exponentially, or somebody decides to host a new years party with lots of players etc. You have the security of knowing the extra capacity is there in case it's needed.

I also do the same thing, but not as much as RTB.
I have to worry about RAM rather than CPU.
So far, I'm stuck with the current configuration unless at least 3 premium users have steady subscriptions. That would increase the RAM by 2 GB. HostingAbove said that I can get each GB of additional RAM for $5.
2 GB would support 7 Blocklands.

Oh my, lol!
Did RTB need 6 months to gain 30+ users? No, RTB has a good reputation already meanwhile you're still hardly trusted. Not to mention RTB is a non-profit. The main reason people aren't getting premium is because services with free servers and 'premium' servers is bullcrap. Why pay money just for 6 extra features that aren't going to be used hardly at all? Most players are gonna grab the free server, because they don't need 'extra features'. RTB is highly successful mainly because they don't give free servers. It's all pay-for-use.
If my hosting service was paid-only, who would use it?
And all free slots are, most of the time, full. So the only way to get any HamHost server after now is usually going to be to pay for it.

Nice job pulling a Kalphiter.

Really, the whole free & premium server idea is silly. I need a server fast, I don't care about extra features and what not, let's see what are my options. Oh hey, CBM, they're full. RTB costs money, that'll be my last choice. HamHost, hmmm they have free servers, I'm gonna get a free server.

The average person is going to grab a free server and not care about extra features. Meanwhile RTB is pay-for-all-features and is constantly getting new updates and clients. If you really want more premium users, you're gonna need more than 6 bonus features.

Nice job pulling a Kalphiter.
Nice job not reading that I was going to re-word it.

I do not have an unlimited supply of free servers.

Where did I mention that EVERYONE needed a free server?

They're not going to be able to grab a free server because all of the free slots are full.

Does this guarantee they're going to get a premium server? No, they're just gonna wait for an opening. You're missing my point here, I'm saying you'd be better off making it all free or all pay-for-use.

HamHost is just 2 slots away from not ever accepting any free users again.
They'll have to either buy premium, or wait for a few months or even years.
I think I'll make some kind of fighting tournament to give away those 2 to the winners.

man getting a point straight with hammer is a pain

man getting a point straight with hammer is a pain
I just responded to the 'no, they're just gonna wait for a free server' part.
Back to the point: I'm not going to make this all-premium, because I'll lose all my clients. 100% of them. And that also hurts future premium user sales.
So I'll have to decide: All-free, or don't change anything.
