Author Topic: Old Games Today  (Read 3657 times)

I watched a Hell Revealed II run once, then I tried playing the WAD normally.

It didn't go well for me.
Holy stuff lol Hell Revealed is hard as hell. BARELY got past through Ultra-Violence. Speed of Doom is another good hard WAD.

I like turning on -nomonsters and then doing tricks. Easier to learn them that way.

Sonic 1 is available on IOS using the new retro sonic engine made by christian whitehead. They added tails and knuckles as playable characters, a 7th chaos emerald(and special stage), a whole bunch of items from the beta of sonic one in debug mode, super sonic/tails/knux, time attack, leaderboards, and new areas only reachable by tails or knux. Im p sure they added a lot more but the list is really long.

I'll go with a natural assumption: you dislike things you're extremely bad at.
that is honestly the dumbest thing I've ever heard

one thing about a lot of older games is that a lot was left to your imagination because of the limitations

i feel like games that relied on that wouldn't hold up today for newer generations that grew up with those gaps more filled

It's from experience. Every person I know who dislikes old games (as in the ones that take skill and memorization, like Mega Man) is terrible at them.

And you can't tell me that every stupidly popular triple-AAA insanely over-budgeted "game" these days isn't stupidly easy.

In terms of visual presentation, yeah. It "left things to imagination" because someone like a level designer expected you to figure out how to use game mechanics to get somewhere instead of holding your hand down a scripted hallway. Platformers are generally less popular these days and I'm willing to bet it's because of how a lot of them are inherently difficult.

Also because you were young, your imagination filled in a bunch of graphical holes, thus why everything was so much fun and looked different than how you remember things.

Modern Shooter: See that glowing object? Good boy, now go plant a C4 on it. *boom* okay good boy *plays cutscene*. Rank up Master sergeant shooter person. Also if your health low? Just take cover behind that wall until the bloody screen goes away.

Old Shooter: Oh beat the first level, okay I'll throw in harder enemies, more hidden weapons, and make the maze more difficult to navigate. Good Luck. I see your health is low, have fun finding all the healthkits in the map, muhahahaha!

Modern Shooter: play against other human beings instead of a bunch of enemies that always do the same thing

Modern multiplayer: Take cover behind  this wall and snipe all day and just call down airstrikes all day. You can unlock stuff if you play long enough, so take this somewhat stuffty rifle.

Old multiplayer: Here is a pistol, we have weapons scattered all across the map. I hope you learned how to strafe, dodge and jump to avoid all those projectiles coming at you. Just like the campaign you will have to find health kits, but hey you have the tools you need to win.

Unreal <3 <3 <3

Pokemon yellow is still a good time. Also the majority of Zelda games are still interesting to me.

I still have an amazing time playing Super Smash Brothers.
