Should the corner jumping bug be fixed?

Author Topic: Should the corner jumping bug be fixed?  (Read 1433 times)

I had no idea this was so controversial. Some heated discussion arose on the r1908 thread when Subpixel asked about it. (continues to page 20 and is still going)

Let's get the terminology clear: this is not a feature. This is a bug. But you need to remember that not all bugs are bad. Read this: http://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/what-should-be-banned.html

For those that don't know what "corner jumping" is:
Basically by repeatedly jumping up against ledges of bricks at different positions and angles sometimes you'll jump up one of them. It's easist to do against a corner, obviously.

So I present to you a simple question. Should this bug be fixed? (Again read the article I linked above, not all bugs should be fixed. Make your own decision.)

I think it should be fixed just because it's annoying to have to test and fix all the corners in a map to make sure people don't exploit it for some kind of advantage.

I agree. Even though practically all builds can be made corner jump proof even without obstructing regular usage or making it look ugly it still takes a long time and it's a whole lot of unnecessary work.

Any and all good things that could come from this bug can be made a lot better with a climbing mod.

So yes, it should be fixed. However, the questions "can it be fixed" and "should we spend time fixing it" are entirely different, and I think that's where some of the controversy is coming from

Yes, i'll repeat myself since this is a new topic

This should be fixed because it's more of a bother than just simply having an add-on that IS optional and can be used with events even that would allow you to climb or move on walls

This would really help with making hard to reach places, well, hard to reach. I've found myself spending hours on challenge levels just to realize you can wall jump to victory.

This is good for parkour challenges and such. There's ways to avoid this if it doesn't get patched.

It's stupid that you have to build your way around this.

There's a parkour playertype that actually climbs walls and can ledge hang rather than corner jump. It would benefit the  majority of servers to have this fixed, and really wouldn't be a loss to those reliant on it because there are alternatives.

cant someone use a server side mod to disallow people playertypes from jumping-per-second any faster then "whatever#"

it wouldnt even be noticeable by normal play, since a blockhead shouldnt normally be jumping any faster then he can land anyways.

That's not a solution for all cases though. If someone were desperate, sure, but at that point they already would have spent the time boxing up the walls

I use this feature for ladders actually.
If you stack 1x2 or 1x3 ramps facing each other, you can 'climb' them like a ladder.

However, yes. It should be removed.
Would that require a brick collision update?

Would that require a brick collision update?
Perhaps it would.
Seriously though, brick collision update is important. because vehicle to brick collision sucks

It's fairly obvious this should be fixed - I don't know why it needed a debate thread. It's not like it would go unfixed if everyone decided they wanted to keep it anyway.
