Author Topic: Pretty sure I got a cop fired today.  (Read 3506 times)

So I was on my way to a ski/snowboard shop earlier today to get my board sharpened. The shop is located in a not so safe part of town. While driving there, I noticed a police checkpoint that I've never seen before. Supposedly there's been a lot of drug traffic coming in and out of town. When it was my turn to stop the cop came to my window and asked me if I had any illegal substances in my possession. What I exactly told him was that "I don't have to answer any questions, may I be on my way now?" This statement obviously ticked him off quite a bit. The officer told me to pull to the side of the road for an inspection, even though I insisted that I don't give him permission to search my car. Eventually he demanded me to get out of my car and he proceeded to search my it. Guess what, he found nothing at and had no cause for searching it. After that I called the police on him and he got loving arrested. I really wasn't expecting him to actually get arrested. Scary experience but I feel really accomplished from it. Don't let corrupt cops intimidate you guys.

Anyways, yeah I know blogland forums whatever. Just thought it was worth sharing.
Go ahead and debate this kind of stuff.

Good job raven standing up to the man :)

He has the authority to search your car, and to detain you. I don't really see why he'd be arrested.

Not in the United States without probably cause..

"sir are you carrying any substances"
"no"
"okay you can go on"

or just let him search your car and make sure he doesn't take any of your stuff

also
"sir can i please search your car"
"corrupt cop get fired"

Also, why would you say you didn't have to answer? That just makes you sound even more suspicious even though it was simply a yes-or-no question.

okay you two didn't have to quote the entire op, js

So you are an ass in real life too? I have to admit that takes balls.

He never stated I was being detained and I never gave him consent to search my car. If he wanted it searched he would need a warrant. Basically he went against my privacy and looked through my stuff without my permission, which is illegal even for officers of the law.

He doesn't have the authority to search your car without your permission. If a cop asks to search your car you have the right to deny him and he can't do stuff without a warrant.

A warrant?

In australia they only need probably cause to search your vehicle. A warrant is a bit over the top if that's really the requirement over there

Why wouldn't you just say no? "I don't have to answer any questions" sounds very suspicious.

calling the cops on a cop sounds kinda weird, like a paradox or something

A warrant is needed if they don't have a probable cause. And he didn't have a probable cause.
