Sounds like Russia are hunting for excuses to start something. I hope its just precautionary.

It's most likely Putin trying to keep up his image of a badass, simply put. Of course Russia's bound to have economic interests in Ukraine and they have a naval base in Crimea – on Ukrainian soil – but it's most likely mainly internal affairs that Putin is dealing with. Ignoring the pleads of the Russian majority in Crimea and backing off would be a huge negative hit to his image, which his popularity strongly relies on.

And of course

Russia may not be the most respected nation but it's not run by idiots who don't understand the importance of maintaining diplomatic relations with the world in this day and age.
