Author Topic: Normal Maps? (Lighting effect for textures)  (Read 1147 times)

Is Normal Maps possible for Blockland bricks?
"Normal maps" are basically where the textures of objects are made so that each individual pixel on the texture's image reacts differently to a lightsource, making objects that are flat appear to be 3-dimensional. This would mostly be noticeable on prints, such as for brick walls.

An example from Starmade, where I and the rest of the tester team have been doing some bugfixing on the game's new feature of normal maps:

It would make bricks look 3D :)

Weirdly enough the default TOP studs have such an effect. The texture itself reacts against the light, but not that much.

But you may notice, the opposite side of the stud doesn't really have dynamic shadows. Having those would make them look very 3D.

Wait you are on the tester team for StarMade?
cool

Since you're a beta tester is it possible that you could get me a copy of starmade?
Hypothetically of course.

inb4some idiot comes in here and starts stuffting all over the place because he thinks this thread is about bringing maps back

At some point he became a forum admin for them I think.

maps will never come back

As if Blockland didn't have performance problems already.

Would be pretty neat.  Would definitely enjoy this because I like to make a lot of dark maps.
