Finally managed to get a liveUSB of linux mint installed.

Really, really, really really really impressed

This literally breaths new life into old computer systems, and it doesn't have that kinda clunky feel that ubuntu had.
If you think that's awesome then you should try xfce on your new install. It's lightweight and extremely customizable.

manjaro xfce!

please help, I'm having issues with my software center on elementary where it doesn't open at all
I've tried uninstalling it and re-installing it and nothings working

Solution: run aptitude from the terminal

or try running the software center from the terminal and tell us the output from it

XFCE is probably the worst DM I've ever seen.

i really like XFCE, why do you think it's so bad?

Uh-oh, I swapped the motherboards of my 2 computers (one uses Windows 7, the other 8). Now Windows is having activation errors on one computer, saying that the product key "exceeded the unlock limit". I don't understand; I paid for both copies!
Looks like I will ultimately have to use Linux Mint. I hate the lack of overclocking tools on Linux.

If I recall Windows ties part of its activation scheme to the motherboard it was installed on. This would explain why you experience the problem after a hardware swap like that.

I'm sure you can get it reactivated by contacting some form of support or something.

Explain.

I prefer XFCE because it allows you to have any panels anywhere you want, and you can choose what is on each of them.

I hate all desktop environments

Well it's an OEM copy, since I built the computer myself, so I cannot get support.
Whatever, at least I will learn about Linux.

except xmonad… if that even qualifies as a DE… probably not
xmonad for the win, still

you will learn about far more than merely a kernel, you will learn that an OS isn't as well-defined as you may think ;P

I need a distro for relatively experienced Linux users. But not as complicated as Arch. That stuff is crazy.

I looked at Manjaro, but I'm not sure.
