Ehh, I'll try qubes too. I know nothing about it, what de is it running? I know its based off red hat though iirc
If it's based off of red hat then my friend might be interested. He uses CentOS because his job requires him to use red hat.

You can pick at boot between KVM(?) or Xfce.

At boot? Why would it not just let the login manager take care of that?

because that's not how Qubes works - it's basically a stuffload of VMs. Why boot one up just to login? You're probably using FDE anyway.

I dabbled for my first time in Linux yesterday, giving Ubuntu a try. I honestly didn't have an opinion on it, but now trying it, I think it's quite nice; especially for a free operating system.

OH I see now. That's really cool. However, it seems like it wouldn't be as lightweight as other distros.

it requires 64 bit hardware(?) and at least 6GB of ram. Not to mention all kinds of other fancy hardware.

Well it seems like it would be good if you had one central computer at your workplace distributing files and software to other computers. That would be pretty cool.

"64-bit Intel or AMD processor (x86_64 aka x64 aka AMD64)
4 GB RAM
32 GB disk space"

btw, all modern desktop processors are 64bit (to my knowledge).
4GB of RAM shouldn't be that tall of an order
32GB of disk space ^

This seems like it would be made for higher end computers.

I'm currently running a...:
- AMD fx-8150
- 8GB of DDR3 RAM
- 500GB of HDD space
- AMD Radeon HD 7770
it runs beautifully. I just need to get monitors to work together.

Good for you.

As for me, I don't really think that security should be a big concern. On this computer I only have a blockland client and a little C++ project I've been working on. I don't think anyone is going to steal a text adventure game.

you wouldn't know if they'd stolen your entire digital identity, your real identity (if you use facebook) and hunted you down
if you aren't taking steps to make sure someone doesn't have it, you should assume someone has it. are you comfortable with someone having access to all the accounts you access on this device?
plus, you should also consider being a role model for other people. by being knowledgeable about these kinds of things, you can help other people who really need it

I have an old facebook account that I never really use. Does that count?

I'm not careful with security and I've never had a problem. I know it's anecdotal, but internet identity thieves prey on those who are stupid with their security, not those who simply aren't careful. e.g. phishing scams and sketchy virus downloads.
