How can I check if the ubuntu repositories are down? I can't seem to install anything because I keep getting 404 errors while trying to get certain packages from the ubuntu repos

I'm able to access the repository just fine when I browse through it manually. I don't understand why Software center is getting 404's.

404 means not found and getting a response at all tells you they're up

I mean, I was able to actually browse to the package file and download it just fine through the browser. I end up getting an error when I try to manually install the packages, though. (In this case it's curl) I get a dependency is not satisfiable: libcurl3 (=7.35.0-1ubuntu2)

Yeah, I'm still really new to this. What is that supposed to mean?

sudo apt-get upgrade works, but doesn't actually do anything.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

I'm getting similar errors trying install just about anything in the software center.

Have you tried downloading it off the site? Are you sure the steam servers are up.
Try changing your download server in software and settings
