Author Topic: Facebook buys out Oculus VR  (Read 2402 times)

Facebook ownership is purely a good thing for the Rift. This wasn't a hostile takeover by a competitor that's planning to scrap the project for the development schematics to make their own VR device better. As a result of its acquisition, Oculus will now have access to funds it never could have dreamed of before while being guided by the huge success of the people behind Facebook.

What could Facebook even do to it to forget it up? Add a Facebook splash screen when it boots up? Horrible stuff. The Rift is obviously ruined.
Facebook does have the habit of buying out companies and shelving their work forever or making their engineers reroute efforts into purely Facebook stuff, so that could be a concern. I didn't really follow the Rift's progress or anything, but it was a kickstarter thing so a lot of people could feel gypped that their donations went toward a company that would be bought out by another before even fully releasing their product.

Yeah, sucks the Rift guys sold out.
But then again 2 billion dollars holy stuff.
I mean it's literally just a screen with motion sensors, how's that worth 2 billion dollars?

More of a privacy concern than a "can i use my software properly" concern.

I am more educated on this issue than you are. I own an Oculus Rift, I have developed programs for it, and I've been following it's progress for over a year. Facebook is not the way this company needs to be going. I don't think the Rift can get worse, but I feel like Facebook won't deliver what fans are hoping for.

The fact that you sincerely believe that anything is going to change in the development of the Oculus rift just because Facebook owns the company developing it now, coupled with the fact that you think that the fact that you own a devkit of the Oculus rift has any bearing on how much you know about what Facebook owning the company means for the Rift suggests otherwise.

Yeah, I don't even use facebook. So if they add the ability to like and share stuff as a core feature of the rift then it really is just that much worse. Obviously no one knows yet if this is their plan, but it is a bit worrying.

edit: oh god what if they made you link it to an fb account just to turn it on lol

It's not even about the direct interactivity (like linking an account and sharing stuff) being a concern because that's pretty unrealistic. But Facebook has done some shady stuff in the past regarding privacy and personal information.

Stop acting like an idiot. The Facebook team wants to use this for social purposes. I think that would be lovely, but it not the purpose of the rift. They are not trying to buy a gaming company, they are trying to acquire technology that they can use to advance socialization.
I think Facebook will do wonderful things for the rift, but gaming is not going to be their focus.

In case you didn't read anything I'll let you know that their public statement is that they will not pursue the social implementations of the Rift until the gaming implementations are solid. And this will be the case until proven otherwise.

How about you stop acting like an idiot?

As I said in another thread:
Alright, you nigs need to start thinking about this from a business perspective rather than an anti-fb perspective.
If facebook even thinks about touching the development of the Rift and its software, they risk losing a good chunk (maybe even all) of that $2bil they spent on Oculus, in fact, the news alone suggests they may lose some of it unless they publicly promise not to touch the Rift. So unless they hate money, the Rift's development will continue as planned with zero intervention from FB other than earning some of the profits.

Except for the fact Facebook is going to reroute 50% of the development team towards "social" projects.

because facebook has never lied to us before

because facebook has never lied to us before

So what if they've lied in the past? That was then and this is now and what is happening now is a different kettle of fish from what's happened in the past

ITT: internet warriors underestimate the driving forces behind the project by projecting underwhelming speculations

Except for the fact the old fish are in with the new fish.

And there's no fisherman.

We don't have a projector, though.

Except for the fact the old fish are in with the new fish.

And there's no fisherman.

Well who put the old fish in the god-damn kettle then?
