they're completely different games. it's like apples and oranges. ssb4 is not objectively better except maybe in that it has more content? (although besides more characters/stages its about the same amount of content to melee i think)

i tab out for 15 minutes
come back and they're STILL playing the same set
melee is faster, has a more developed meta and is also a completely different style of game
sm4sh doesn't have many combos to speak of (yet)
melee is technical, faster, and has a lot of combo game
like you don't see or have yet to see a 0-death combo happen in sm4sh that isn't like diddy and someone not knowing how to airdodge or tech

i like ssb4 way better because we've seen literally all there is to see in melee, it's like emotionless love. ssb4 is long, tense, and stressful to watch. suspenseful, new, and interesting games are almost guaranteed. well before it's just diddy kong but still.

not much of any of that going on lol
like i love sm4sh it's fun and it got me into smash
but i can also say i respect melee skill and play more than i do sm4sh because it's 1. undeveloped 2. not much variation

You have to take into account tiers and the fact that other people see fox/falcon/falco/sheik players so they main them.

If I could main Ike and be on par with everyone else I would but some characters can't accomodate with the pre-established metagame tactics that all competitive players know and use.

diversity doesn't really factor in unless you see different characters finally being used.
