when I went to a friends house to play smash 64 (they didn't own a wii, melee, or brawl at the time) I was usually stuck with this one controller that didn't have the plastic over the joystick and it was just a pointy steel wire sticking into my thumb

tore up the skin pretty badly

I don't hate the controller's design though. All I said was the L and R triggers on the fight pad are much better for Smash games since you need quick response time.
