I'm using debian with Xfce atm. my laptop is crap so lightweight desktop environments are good but otherwise I don't mind switching

I'd say try MATE.

1. I tried to replicate that issue you were having with changing google to firefox in the swipe up and couldn't replicate it.
2. Smart notice is the forgetin best widget holy heck

Smart notice is nice but I don't think it works well with my style
