it's a legitimate term with a really bad reputation. like the word "warning" would have fit just as well, if not better.

No its just the way its used that makes it look bad.

Like Tumblr users will use it as an excuse to justify stupid things. Recently a friend of mine got a message on tumblr asking her to tag all her pictures that had faces in them as "TW (trigger warning) : Faces" or something like that because she had a fear of faces and wanted to block any image that had a face in it. Its ridiculous

They could have just said Warning and been perfectly fine.

Trigger warnings are for people who have like PTSD from rape, military service, attempted Self Delete, etc. For people still recovering even the mention of this stuff can trigger panic attacks and the like, so it's a warning

Noises and visuals are not the same as trigger words and cannot really be warned against because every PTSD suffer's trigger is different and hard to define
