why would the rest of the UK get to vote if the scots want to leave
Because Scotland is all of ours.
The only thing that defines whether you could vote in this referendum was if you were living in Scotland or not at the time.
It's not a thing for the Scottish, otherwise all the Scots would get a vote.
And from a country that benefits so much from being part of the UK it's a very selfish thing wanting this referendum.
Scotland is hardly oppressed. It gets so many unique benefits that the other members of the UK don't get.
One of it's biggest arguments is that it doesn't get represented enough by Parliament, because Scotland mostly voted Labour and we have a Tory/LibDem Government.
Yet that is the case for every single Labour voter in the UK, not just Scotland. It's a whole part of the democracy.
There was a referendum several years ago now to vote on whether we should change to a new system of voting for MPs, and if Scotland was unhappy with the way our system represents them, then they should have voted for that (which hardly anyone in the UK did).
Not start the argument that they want to leave, just because they can't wait the 4 years that everyone else has to for a General Election.
Government's last 4-5 years. Independence would last forever.
