Author Topic: Map Creation Brush Tool  (Read 4135 times)

As much as I hate to say it, but I do miss maps, sure you might say that they were ugly and broken, I agree, but it had a whole exploration and atmosphere on each map that sadly a big build can't do without lagging the game for the majority of the users (Sylvanor's city for example) no I don't want the sloppy old map system to come back, I've been thinking of a brand new one that is way less glitched.

Something that could look like it's made of modter bricks but more advanced, sadly the modter pack limits a lot of possibilities to create maps, you can't even do a road properly without needing a ugly 4x tall sidewalk to separate the grass from the road and you also can't overlap each other to make life easier.

So I've been thinking of a mode that allows you to create mountains, islands and other terraformations by simply using the mouse, with a huge selection of pre-made models to add around the map (trees, buildings, vehicles, you name it) and a list of textures to create road paths among other things (a dirt road, asphalt, snow on the top of a mountain and others) something like that terrain editor or the torque constructor tool (or whatever it's called) and be able to use custom models to the map and export it as a NewMap_Example.zip, and with a custom GUI that loads those maps as a whole, I believe we as a community can archieve fantastic new additions to the game ourselves if we work together and find new ways to make things functional without relying to a single person which obviously lost interest on developing the game further, I know we already have terrain generator tools, but that alone is not enough really, I'm thinking of something bigger that allows more stuff than just blocky terrains.

I would love to mess around with a tool like this.

This would be nice to play with

Giving you support because that's a great idea.

Edit: Is the terrain is made out of bricks or just smooth ground?

I've been thinking of a smooth ground that uses simple looking textures like modter does and not low quality and ugly like it was before v21

Or something that actually looks like it's made of modter bricks (think of it like that mountain creation tool from roblox which looks like it's made of modter but it properly blends with other montains) but with properly places roads and such without ugly and worthless workarounds to hide the limitations of those bricks, the more possible the better really.

Okay sorry I'm terrible to explain things without screenshots that I sadly can't take them now

So basically a modter type terrain tool that automatically does the ramps?

He said he didn't like bricks or modter.

He said he didn't like bricks or modter.
Then what does he want it to use? Static shapes?
Mod-Ter is actually a good system.
It could use a bit of work here and there, but I have seen the possibilities.

Not automaticly, okay think about a brush tool, that you use it with the mouse to create terrains, lakes, mountains, materials and everything, instead of building every single piece of terrain

I'm not sure how you think this would be any better than the maps we had before

I'm not sure how you think this would be any better than the maps we had before
Well it could have a more cleaned up system compared to how messy it was and it could use higher resolution textures, I don't know really I just want to see a tool that allows to make maps again

Well it could have a more cleaned up system compared to how messy it was
is this intentionally vague?
and it could use higher resolution textures
I'm not sure there was anything stopping you from using higher-resolution textures before. that's not why it was ugly, though

making terrain in a video game not look ugly is a lot more complicated than just using higher-resolution textures
this is basically what terrain in blockland was

from a distance, that isn't so bad. but blockland isn't a flight simulator or something where the way it looks up close wouldn't matter
when you walked up close to it, maybe some terrible grass would appear, that turns to face you whenever you move. but that's as good as it got

here are some good examples

see all the little differences? like, there are trees and rocks, and basically every part of the ground covered in grass is covered in actual grass that looks good
in the first one there's a cave, which wasn't even possible with blockland's terrain. decent cliffs were also not possible. and if you did try to make a cliff, other than it actually just being a really steep slope, the side of it would be really stretched and terrible

I dunno if it's possible for such a terrain editor to exist in blockland or not. I doubt it, especially as a third-party mod. but in any case, there's no way someone would put that much effort into this game

Well I'm not saying to make a next gen looking terrain, I just want to see a new map editor...

Look I don't know much about that stuff alright? I just want to see a new tool being made

A user made tool to make terrain would very likely need to be a separate program that changes the created terrain into a .bls file.
