A few of my only gripes with New Vegas were the game being linear af even though it advertised open world gameplay, and that New Vegas was smaller than my neighborhood. (not counting the slummy ass Freeside part)
My first 30~ hours of gameplay were exploring and I haven't even been to Primm to do any of the story

fallout 3 is a pretty good game, just not a very great fallout game

if there was a good fallout game released in modern times, it has great potential

You are pretty much locked to the bottom of the map if you don't know how to get past the Deathclaws or aren't going along the story path.

new vegas' biggest flaw is totally the forgetin deathclaw barrier

like the map design is actually largely competent outside of that and occasionally has some neat things to it in the DLC particularly but then you look and the game just raw kills you because it doesn't like your guts

like that's realistic sure but the game's about exploration, let the player explore

You can go up from goodsprings and only have to fight a couple of cazadors. That's what I did.

Pretty much this. People argue that New Vegas's map is bigger but the deathclaws and cazadores pretty much block passage to any other route to Vegas than the long one opened up by the game.

If you stay in Goodsprings until Level 15, sure.

cazadors are worse than deathclaws tho

wait cazadors are way easier

like you usually just shoot them in the wing a few times and then walk away cause now they can't reach you

if you really really wanna push through the deathclaws in the middle of the map, put a bunch of points into sneak and wait til night
the trek takes a few minutes and if you aren't careful they'll see you but if you do it right its p swag

I went almost directly after I killed the powder gangers. The cazadors aren't that big of a problem if you are prepared/know how to play.

really wanting an elder scrolls game based in hammerfell and stros m'kai
and for fallout, i'll take whatever they give me to be honest with you

fallout 3's character design is the stufftiest thing ive ever seen in my entire life

Fallout New Vegas is better because it was written by Chris Avellone, the same guy who wrote Fallout 1 and 2, and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, most of the surviving team from the original development studio behind the Fallout series until Bethesda bought and forgeted it (I mean in terms of the story and atmosphere and some gameplay elements; most gameplay was definitely improved).

Chris Avellone is a loving legendary writer, and I was more entertained by his story than whatever that was in Fallout 3. The only reason the game "sucks" according to people was for the same reason they got screwed out of turning KotORII into the best Star Wars game ever; their publisher (Bethesda for Fallout, LucasArts for KotORII) forgetED them over.

Bethesda had 6 years to make Fallout 3, but they could barely dime out 11 or so months for Fallout: New Vegas. Similarly, BioWare got something like 3 years for KotOR1, and yet Obsidian got 11 months for KotORII.

loving handicapped publishing decisions are the reason why the game is buggy. Had they been given the problem development cycle, New Vegas would have been the highest rated Fallout in the series.

Just my 2c.
