"You're welcome. I don't think your squad would fare too well without you in command..."

he trails off for a moment as a new thought presents itself

"What about Arkhip? I tried to talk him back but he was dead set on leaving."
: What? What did he do?

Jaakko leaves before Cualli starts talking to Elu. He wonders if he really should report to Bell his concern that Cualli is a desertion risk. Elu was another circumstance. What would come to the bot if Cualli went away, or was reported as at risk for desertion?

She couldn't have known. If she would have known in advance, would there be a change in her behavior?

Jaakko mulls it over.

The bot! Elu would know. And with his childlike innocence, he would give an honest answer and wouldn't lie unless Cualli told him to. He probably remembers every minute of the last few weeks. Did he understand lying?

He reasoned it was worth a shot, but Jaakko feels he doesn't have the authority to try, because it's not in his place. Jaakko was the flight lead, not the squadron leader, the enlisted were not his responsibility. But reporting a deserter would be. He thinks some more, and reasons that it is likely, in light of the recent attack by Deltan hardliners, that if command believed a Deltan was a desertion risk, they'd be detained, rather than following conventional desertion risk procedures.

And Elu would be sent away.

And Jaakko had agreed with Gus that Cualli will not come to harm, and HiCom would likely detain her. It was worth a shot.

: What? What did he do?

"He was on the south flank and decided to turn tail and desert. I noticed too late and couldn't do anything about it and you were busy in the dogfight. Tried talking him back but he wasn't having any of it."

: You can't be serious!
: He's dead serious. Eri's gone. Just took four Thunderbolts and ran right into Izzy's arms.
: That son of a bitch!
Kommandant punches the object nearest to his fist, which just so happens to be the Shikra. He quickly regains some of his composure and removes his helmet, looking just as displeased as ever.
: I need to inform the Sky Marshal. If that scrawny little snot actually plans on turning our missiles over to the Goths then we are going to be in some big loving trouble.

Jaakko heads to the CIC to report.

Walter rolls his mouth to one side as he thinks and tries to piece together possible scenarios.

"Might be able to still track his location and see his intent, hopefully he's heading somewhere neutral to just ditch the foxbat and start anew."

Jaakko heads to the CIC to report.
Both your squadron commander and the Sky Marshal are present.

Walter rolls his mouth to one side as he thinks and tries to piece together possible scenarios.

"Might be able to still track his location and see his intent, hopefully he's heading somewhere neutral to just ditch the foxbat and start anew."
: We're out in the middle of the ocean, man, I doubt he can even make it to any landmass without refueling. If I were him, I'd ring up the Gothic fleet, hand over the thunderbolts, and "start anew" with a million aurei in my pocket.

Pansar pushes Frisk against the Shikra's ladder and presses his index finger into his chest
: That does sound like something you'd do alright. Maybe we should be keeping an eye on you as well.
: Unlike him though, I don't plan on getting hundreds or thousands of my countrymen killed because I sold military secrets to the enemy. Besides, I bet the Imperium would tax the stuff out of that million anyway.

"Colonel, Sky Marshal," Jaakko addresses.

He stops abruptly to salute, and quickly continues. His face is gravely serious.

"I have a report, there's been a desertion."

Markus finally matches speed with the carrier, and brings the Condottiero down gently. He removes his helmet and disembarks, climbing down the ladder. On his face is a mixture of emotions, ranging from confusion to frustration to horror.

Why? They've killed thousands of his countrymen, and instead of standing up and fighting, he breaks now? Why?

Markus finds himself trying to rationalize Eremit's decision, with what little he knows about him.

"Wonder if he will fly with them too. Might get to see him again after all."

Walter nudges virvel with his elbow

: Yes, I believe I overheard something about that. Do you have some details to share?

"Wonder if he will fly with them too. Might get to see him again after all."

Walter nudges virvel with his elbow
: Yeah. Maybe. Hmm.

Virvel starts walking off, and Frisk follows her, looking a bit confused.

Walter raises his brow for a moment in wonder then turns back to Rikard

"How are those new recruits you got assigned doing? Did they recover that one who was downed during the previous mission?"

"Sir, a member of Djuriskas- Arkhip Orlov, broke formation in his Foxbat loaded with Thunderbolts. I couldn't tell you which way he was going off the top of my head, as I was committed to fighting the Imperial air detachment,"

The Sky Marshal's perpetually displeased look makes Jaakko a bit anxious.

"How are those new recruits you got assigned doing? Did they recover that one who was downed during the previous mission?"
: Nah. Dead.
: Maybe it would be best if you talk to the other two yourself, I have to report to the Sky Marshal.

Kommandant begins walking away, with a somewhat noticeable limp.

The Sky Marshal's perpetually displeased look makes Jaakko a bit anxious.
: This is disturbing news. Our ability to wage an offensive war by land and sea is already poor enough; if the Goths research a countermeasure to our ace in the hole against their aerial fleet, there's no chance whatsoever of ending this on even terms.

He walks over to a crewman and orders them to see if they can still track the MiG.
: Major Kirves, do you have any idea as to his motivation or where he may be headed?

"I believe he said something about his reasoning, but I was engaged with the Imperial squadron. Lieutenant Ashford was attempting to talk him down at the time, if I recall correctly. As for where he was heading, I think he was skirting around the dogfight to the south, and then split in some direction. I was engaged, and couldn't pay attention. I suggest bringing Lieutenant Ashford up here, sir,"
