Japan unveils a conventional Active denial system for light armoured vehicles

union unveils their modular full-infantry bodysuit armor thing for all weather and hazardous conditions
since it's based off of the swedish modular space hardsuit, the development of it was mostly adapting the functions of the spacesuit for infantry combat and cost.
basic models have a basic health monitoring system and temperature control, along with some other built-in functions like IFF and flashlights
special forces models have super cool built-in HUDs and interfaces that also offer imaging modes and datalink software.
some rather utilitarian functions from the spacesuit like the grapple hook are included by default but can be removed.

those must cost some pretty coin

coin is not a thing in sweden

even i think that this is getting seriously ridiculous
it's loving 2016
you can't have huge space stations, iron man suits, nanobots, and functional railguns

i mean we're allies so obviously i would appreciate this but out of character i think it's absurd

the russians look at railgun designs
"this is stupid why not just use a copper coil and blast it with electricity"
a nearby scientist opens his mouth to speak and an engineer slaps him in the face
a nearby historian opens his mouth to speak and decides the better of it

the NSSR announces new coilgun experiments to refine much older ideas because coilguns are actually more efficient and easier to control but harder to time
they also experiment with different coil designs to avoid or lessen the issue of turning the coils on and off

another russian scientist orders a spyder laser off of the internet
"wow this thing is really powerful"
he is interested in weaponizing it because russia
he gets laughed at and vows to prove the nonbelievers wrong!

Vietnam starts developing infantry coil weapons
Ten experimental rifles are to be made.

i'm doing coilguns
you're doing coilguns
want to do coilguns together?

earlier scientist discovers that 5W lasers are available (keep in mind that 1W is enough to burn paper and wood, singe skin, etch leather, pop balloons, and light matches and cigarettes; also, incandescent light bulbs are around 60W usually)

hey um

poland

i mean i dont wanna be rude or something this is entirely 100% your decision

but uh

can i please have ostpreussen

can i please have ostpreussen
i predict the future and the future will be the same as the past
however i am australia so i guess i dont have a say in it

australia begins research on coil guns n stuff

okay this scientist is really getting on our nerves
to appease him we throw more money at the laser research program and demand a continuously-usable (can be fired straight without overheating) 500W laser by year's end
(note that even in 2014 there were, albeit rare, 100000W - 200 times more powerful than mine - lasers but it only fired for 10 minutes straight, so really i'm being light on research here)

ey if vietnam agrees we can all form a coilgun research pact

forget yes

fixed

also can join coilgun project?

if I remember correctly I was also in a tank research project, how's that going?

the more the merrier

Did some calculations, if we were to get a portable 500W laser, then we would need about 2kg of Li-ion batteries to fuel it at full power, and it would last an hour and cost $200

Clearly those graphene batteries would be nice to have
also it would take 4s of power to equal one AK round and the AK's fire rate is 1.66 rounds per second, meaning we need a 3000-3500W laser to equal one AK47... which would require 12kg (26 lbs) of Li batteries to power. And shockingly, the price of those batteries is extremely close to the price of equivalent rounds ($1200-$1400). But there are some tactical advantages - no wind or gravity, no reload, practically infinite range and precision, and it's its own illumination and targeting! And ammo would be heavy anyway. Obviously we have a long way to go - both in the actual laser and the power supply. But give it a few years and it might be viable.

Also, I should note that obviously you wouldn't carry around 1 hour of straight fire, either with a gun or laser, but with a laser you need not only enough energy but enough power output. Again, graphene would make laser warfare much more viable.

this is conventional body armor with a hud

it doesn't grant you any superpowers or anything wow
