VATS just made up for Fallout 3s terrible gunplay.

I found myself hardly ever using VATS in New Vegas.

VATS really helped me when I was starting out, as I didn't have much knowledge of the game mechanics and had a low gun skill and stuff.

Obisidan destroyed BioWare with KotORII and Neverwinter Nights 2, massacred Bethesda with the original Fallouts and New Vegas, and wrecked Interplay with Wasteland 2. If publishers stopped giving them utterly ridiculous timelines to make their games (KotORII was done in ELEVEN months, whereas KotOR took 3 YEARS), they would probably be some of the best games of all time.
