well I haven't been to a tourney because im just not that good at melee so its not worth it, tell me, how IS the community?
If someone is clearly trunching me they usually offer advice or constructive criticism, I've never felt disrespected by a player at my locals. There's definitely a lot of camaraderie and friendship in the Chicago scene because it's is so small, but I consider myself an outsider to that because I've not really been entrenched there.
People host smashers they don't even know in their houses sometimes, they lug their CRTs and gamecubes to weeklies and majors, they carpool with people from their scene to tournaments, they host smashfests in their houses for anyone to come. It's not uncommon for groups of smashers to go to restaurants after a tournament to hang out. It's hard to be an starfish in that kind of environment.
The thing is having a mindset of "wow you suck, I'm so much better and cooler than you, stop playing the game" is unhealthy for competitive play. It stems from insecurity. The kinds of guys who do this are being driven to play by what other people think of them, in interest of their reputation or something I guess. Most of them fall to the wayside because their source of motivation is unsustainable.
You do understand people act differently in reality right? If you act cancerous irl you get punched in the face/kicked out of the venue, things are a lot different online where your animosity comes into play. And yes I'm using two popular spots where Melee players congregate beyond real life settings, even then you had the instance with people chanting for Melee during the grand finals of Apex(?) Smash 4, which although only one instance, shouldn't have happened, nor should it have been possible to begin with (as it shouldn't have had enough people to catch on.) So yes, if you disagree you need to open your eyes or look at a few more cancerous vs non cancerous communities as comparison.
What? Of course I understand that, my point was you're using the stufftiest parts of the INTERNET smash community as a frame for judging the entire competitive scene, 99% of which is based in REAL LIFE and not the internet, most of whom are at the very least polite.
I agree the Apex thing was stuffty. But in the end that was a few dozen guys in the crowd starting that. Smash 4 had also ran like two hours over IIRC, so it was less to do with animosity and more to do with being inconsiderate. Also, the entire smashbros subreddit front page was statements from community leaders and such talking about what happened, that chant was by no means tolerated.
