Author Topic: Why do people commit Self Delete?  (Read 16595 times)

Sometimes it isn't depression. If a person who as always been completely rational all their life before commiting Self Delete probably did so while thinking rationally. If a person becomes totally convinced that their life is pointless and will only cause harm, antidepressants aren't going to do anything.
To me that sounds symptomatic of mental illness. I'm pretty sure that intrusive thoughts about the pointlessness of life is a documented symptom of depression in the DSM-IV.

This is an excellent quote.

I'm not sure what's so confusing about this. Is an illness that affects somebody's mind instead of only their body a particularly difficult thing to comprehend? If depressed people are just whining pussies, are bedridden cancer patients worthless bums that need to just shut up about it and die already? Is it possible that people like Refticus and Bisjac are willfully ignorant of what depression actually is just as an excuse to be an starfish to somebody else?

Everyone gets depressed. Thats normal.
Pussies cant cope and give up.

You and your excus'ist pill pipping generation is trying to pass the blame. Its easy to not be responsible for anything when you can just play the victim card and declare disabilities.

Everyone gets depressed. Thats normal.

None needed. Its common knowledge. Its a human trait.

No, it's a living being trait. Other species can get depressed too, you know.

My point remains. Not sure why that mattered to you.

The more semantically correct way to ask would be "is depression common," to which nimh.nih.gov says: "Depression is a common but serious illness."

Doesn't surprise me one bit.

I dont get why its so shocking to a few of you. You think you are supposed to be happy and feel hopeful and safe and accomplished at all times?

If we couldnt worry about things or be sad about events, then our minds would be unable to learn, and we would be unable to act and react properly to anything in life.

Its normal. Those who make a proper effort are rewarded with happiness later on. Thats the balance.
While pill poppers trying to cheat the system are forever in that slump lol.

The symptoms of a depressed person and severity thereof can vary greatly. It literally says this in the first article that comes up when you google "is depression normal":
"Depression presents differently in every individual, in terms of its origins, the types of symptoms experienced, and the frequency and duration of those symptoms."

What's handicapped is believing depression always has the same symptoms/severity and the only difference between sufferers is how they cope with it.

Depression is not the same thing as normal sadness. In addition, nobody here argued that it was wrong to feel sad or "down" sometimes, only that being depressed doesn't make you a wimp. Not only did you misrepresent an opposing argument, you misunderstood what clinical depression actually is.
