Adding on to this. I think the shadows don't really belong in a minimap (But they would be great for a world map!). Perhaps for the minimap you could turn off the shadows but still do the angle shading? I think that would work the best.

This is the most likely choice yea.

Also a possibility, I may find that the trees blending in with the grass bother me too much not to include shadows.
