Author Topic: Why doesn't Badspot make it open-source?  (Read 6692 times)

Wouldn't like open source expose the game to many more exploits?

Wouldn't like open source expose the game to many more exploits?
Not if there was an approval system and trust worthy reviewers in place

yes it would expose more exploits because people would be able to look at the source code which is a lot easier than disassembling and reverse engineering. people would most certainly find bugs and exploit them to hell because people are idiots
zeblote was telling me the other day that there should be only a certain group of people who can make changes but at this point it doesn't sound open source at all does it, it sounds more like badspot hiring people without pay
i think the only reason that badspot isn't making the game open source is because someone could really easily make a key spoofing system or find another crash exploit for servers and it would overall be a mess

RTB had that and backdoor stuff still fell through the cracks. It also took weeks or more just to get your add-on reviewed by the RTB staff.

It's not like it's impossible to just rip the key system out of the whole game anyway

Poor review team

...whom also either had busy lives or just didn't care about actually reviewing a script's codes for backdoors

But even if people's submitted codes take weeks to be reviewed and applied, it's better than nothing, heck, i think Garry's Mod's dev branch actually functions like that

It's not like it's impossible to just rip the key system out of the whole game anyway
yeah it is possible but it is /really loving hard/
like looking through the disassembly is a real pain and nobody would dedicate their lives to doing something like that because it isn't worth it
however with the source people could look at the key system a lot more easily and find exploits and abuse them without dedicating a lot of time to a hack at all
like seriously having the actual game source would make ripping the key system about 100000000000x easier and i could see some skid idiots doing it

You don't need the source for that, so it's kind of a moot point. Badspot would simply file a dmca takedown notice for modified versions like this.

In a way, yes. However it would also make it much easier to fix these exploits.

You guys really need to stop making everything seem overly dramatic, lol.

You don't need the source to do anything you want. It'd just make it a ton easier for someone malicious to make a completely cracked version and put a torrent up for it.

yeah but piratebay probably doesn't give a stuff about dmca take downs do they
if someone hacked the key system and basically made the game free for all to play and posted it on piratebay or some other place then badspot couldn't really do anything about it

We can probably remove the auth system in a day or two if you really want to do that.

Some people will always be evil, it shouldn't get in the way of progress.

The only stuff that is stopping key piracy is badspot manually checking for that stuff.

I mean, I'd love to poke around the source of Blockland, it's just that there are some concerns.
(And also that I don't think Badspot would ever release the source)

if anything he should release the v0002 source not retail blockland source.

He doesn't make money off v0002 anyways and it's considered dead so I don't see why he should sacrifice retail Blockland.
