Author Topic: Why doesn't Badspot make it open-source?  (Read 6696 times)

but it sure is going through a slow and painful decrease in popularity.
According to which statistics?

You seem to just conflate your personal fatigue towards the game with the thoughts of the grand majority.

i think the popularity is increasing, our ID count is going up faster than it used to iirc, and every time there's a big sale the playercount spikes

There are 10 times as many ids as 5 years ago, yet there are less players online on average.

Popularity spikes during every sale but almost all of these people leave a few days later.

servers, likely

i don't really notice a difference in the average of players online though

Just an FYI to everyone, the "Blockland 2" stuff in this thread is bullstuff trollbait, don't fall for any of it. Zapk tried to prank me with this crap once before his latest drama fiasco.

People fall for that?

If there was a bl2, it wouldnt be torque. There likely isnt much further he can go with the game unless its just updating current bl with basic content addons.

A new bl woild have to be huge, big engine, big graphics, and it would require a known userbase beforehand to make it worth the effort lol.
Its a gamble. Not likely to happen.

If he did a kickstarter needing like 100k(?) to produce the game, that in itself would help sell bl1 lol. And it could gauge a reaction we all wanna see :p

Unless Blockland 2 is coming out anytime soon I wouldn't count on an open source Blockland.

If Badspot wanted to effectively move stuff over to a new engine i'd back it.

Hint hint baddy. Free money for three weeks worth of work.

moving over to a new engine wouldnt take three weeks it would take a lot longer

But if it takes 3 weeks, than how would it be longer?!

I just hope that if he did decide to make it open source that people would release content they made instead of hording it for their servers, never to be officially released beyond showing off cool screenshots.

The add-ons they hoard for their server is the only incentive to get people to join. If people don't like that they can start making their own private add-ons then.

I'll tell you this. Badspot was probably less than the age of 25 when he made Blockland. I'm 25 now and still haven't made my own game.

This has given me the incentive to start making my own games instead of whining about when a new update will be out. It's hard being a single game developer and honestly I would probably stop working on a 10+ year old game too. There is only so much stuff that can be updated.

Even unity has more potential than torque, think about that for a second.

Making your own game (even a clone of X game here) is still better than modding an open sourced Blockland. It's more rewarding.

Honestly there are very few game engines out there with the capability and ease-of-use in modding that Torque offers, which is a little sad. Hopefully something superior can come out sometime.

Torque Constructor is a terrible map making tool.

I had to downgrade my maps because they couldn't be fully supported in Blockland.
