Author Topic: Why doesn't Badspot make it open-source?  (Read 6693 times)

/title. Why? I mean, hes working on other games now, so why doesn't he hand development over to we, the people?

Because that would hurt his profits and his ability to counteract people making exploits.

People would just compile the game for themselves, so he'd stop making money.

Even if he's not making a lot off Blockland right now (he's probably making at least as much as he's been over the past few years, I doubt it's declined) he would also be forfeiting any opportunity to make money off it in the future. (something akin to the steam release)

also licensing issues. Torque 3D may be open source, but TGE wasn't

ability to counteract people making exploits.

If everyone has the source, everyone can help fix these exploits.

There should be no problem at all releasing the source of decade old abandonware, especially considering it has a newer version that already is open source...

I'm guessing its more that Badspot is more interested in himself than he is the game. Which, seeing as its his game is perfectly acceptable.

As long as digital content keeps selling, it never stops profiting if the licensing fee is part of the price you pay, perhaps a community made blockland-esque game is whats needed, who knows

Wait for Badspot to die and 70 years after that, it's yours to keep.

The game still makes him money. He doesn't owe anything to you and he doesn't have to give his game away.

Maybe if you people weren't so annoying and negative he'd find motivation to update the game more. Personally I'm going through the "game dev" path in education and a more open blockland rip off is my dream project. If the planets align and pigs fly, you'll hear about it several years from now.

You better keep it equally low poly to keep it easy to make models for.

Why do you even want it to be open source? The game is already good enough for a 2001 engine.

Why do you even want it to be open source?

To make it better. This should be obvious.

To make it better. This should be obvious.
Obviously, but I want a specific answer lol

I'm not against you, but giving it totally to the community.
I'm feeling bad about that. :-\

it being "abandonware" isn't a legal defense. they could still sue you (badspot) for it

unless somebody's gonna go to his house and get it off his computer, we still wouldn't have the source code
Obviously, but I want a specific answer lol
why?
