Author Topic: Haven't played Blockland since 2008  (Read 1313 times)

I haven't played Blockland in a good while. I forgot my old forum account password and couldn't reset it, but thankfully was able to create a new one by re-registering through Steam.

So, since I've been back, I've noticed a lot of changes. Like, no more RTB.

Could someone catch me up on the big changes since then and what people have done to compensate for them?
For instance, do we have to get all our add-ons through the forums now?

Basically yes, although there are some RTB archives to look for the oldies.

There is also no more maps, as they are now replaced with shaders and shadows, and people can now make more large scale maps using Modter Bricks.

People are however, working for an RTB replacement, such as ORBs and Blockland Glass. Be sure to check them out if you have the chance.

Otherwise, welcome back.

If you still want to at least play with the bedroom http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=280302.0 although it's a tad buggy vehicle-physics wise but other than that it seems to work pretty well.

Also http://www.blockland.us/News-Archive.html judging on you not playing since 2008 you missed a lot of neat stuff

http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=291845.0 [GSF] Ghost made a procedural terrain generator, so I would recommend getting that.

The memes are danker than ever before.

On a serious note, the number of datablocks and bricks you can have loaded were increased from before. I'm not sure about the number for datablocks, but you can now have up to about a million bricks loaded.

1. We now have someone running a RTB-like program called oRBs, which will make all available features of RTB available like server preferences and choosing color-sets rather than manually changing. I also believe they have the master chat up sometimes.
We now have someone working on fixing the physics to be more proper (although I'm not sure of the condition of the project)
Speedkart and Superkart, two racing gamemodes with production lead by Filipe.
No maps obviously. Though we have static maps, although not the same as real maps, make it able to play some old maps in the current version of BL.
Procedural Terrain Generator was updated to be totes hot.
Faster loading speeds.
I'll update the list later.

2. People have put up RTB archives to archive all add-ons previously on RTB, a quick search will help you find it. I recommend Swollow's.

RTB-like program called oRBs

I saw this posted earlier. Along with Blockland Glass, which I just found. But it doesn't look very active.

Which is better, oRBs or Blockland Glass?

Based on preference really. oRBs and Blockland Glass will do the same basic thing that its meant to provide for you. Try both and see what you like.

Don't use orbs if you decide to not use the IRC. It's known to be a cause of crashing someone's server when they host non-dedicated.

I'd say that's more than a few years. That's almost a decade.

Welcome back though.
I think events were here by 2008, but there you go. That was in V9, which came out August 2008.
We have brick physics, which came out in V11, back in March 2009.
Port-forwarding is no longer required (but may be for some users), instead you can generally just host by pressing the start server button.
We no longer have maps, but we do have shadows/shaders, plus a changable environment (change the floor/sky/water textures, add water of various heights and speed/direction, change the colours of the sun/light, day-night cycle, so on).
There are default doors, default bots, default water bricks, and ModTerrain bricks (these are large modular bricks, of various shapes and sizes, designed to be put together to create brick-based terrain. You can even build other bricks on/in them).

Really, to get up to date, have a read through the Blockland News Archive.
This covers all the updates up until 2013, when Blockland became available on Steam.
For updates after 2013, have a look in the Development Board.
There's some overlap between 2011-2013 too.
