Here's what I did when I decided to come back into the game, try all weapons. Even if they "suck", I would try them and find out which ones I need to work more on and whatnot.

Someone got game-banned during me and acorn's office game, and you can only get game-banned if a VALVe employee issues it because game bans come from 'the developer.'
This was mid-match too, and there was a mysterious viewer the entire time.

It would be cool if that was a VALVe employee the entire time. (I was told they watch your match if ~6 people report someone, and the entire team/a few friends did.)

I'm pretty sure Game bans also come from overwatch verdicts.

i hope you know thats complete bullstuff btw. if you get 6 reports youre just added to the overwatch queue and if its just completely blatant cheating you get processed in a few hours. so the likely scenario here is the handicap went all out rage hacking for a few games in a row and during yours he got processed and banned

There's a difference between vac bans, game bans and overwatch bans according to steam

when you are overwatch banned it will appear as a game ban, but theres another way to receive a game ban where there actually is an investigation. the only other way to have a game ban other than being overwatched in csgo is getting whats called an "untrusted ban", which is when your game does something that the game server deems impossible to do by a player (e.g your entire viewmodel is flipped upside down, or on faceit they have detection for if your aimbot is moving linear to a hitbox) and will then kick you from the game. youll receive a VAC ban after getting kicked and a message when you launch cs saying "this account is untrusted"

eventually, that incident is investigated and if it is deemed impossible for you to do without manipulating the game externally then it switches from a VAC ban to a game ban. so the only case where valve would be investigating an account and applying a game ban is in the case of untrusted accounts and it goes from vac -> game ban. overwatch bans are immediately applied as game bans and stay that way, unless you get banned for griefing in overwatch which is iirc only a 3 month ban and then the game ban disappears from your account and you can play again.
