Author Topic: Advertisements in videogames  (Read 2425 times)

hey whats up

I've been brainstorming about advertisements in video games. They've been here forever, for example:

NFSU2NBA Live 08Battlefield 4

Now they've became a standard in mobile gaming, and some developers want to push that, and bring it to bigger platforms.
I've been wanting to know what would be good methods of putting advertisements in video games. Obviously opinions will vary, so I'm happy I have the forum to hear multiple voices.
These examples are from old to new, with the newest being (in my opinion) the worst case. These examples aren't the only way to put advertisement in video games though.
We have putting advertisements in loading screens, optional advertisements a player can watch for a bonus (prominent on mobile), hidden advertisements, homages, ripoffs to avoid copyright but to still let the player know which brand it is supposed to be, and the list goes on.

So I want to know from you guys, and have a discussion about, what method of ad placement would you be OK with in video games if they had to have them. What method would you prefer to see the most and would make you the least upset.

edit:

This goes for both free and pay games.

The only time I think it's acceptable is in sports games, in the places where advertisers usually advertise in real games.
For example, the uniforms having the actual adverts on them, or the banners around a pitch. But only if those adverts are related to the game company itself, or are actual sponsors of the association behind the game.

Otherwise, I don't think it's on.
I've already paid £40-60 on the game. You don't get to shovel adverts down my face too.

Perfectly ok if the game is in the real world and in a place where it fits

Promotion content is also advertisement, yes.
mmh, under what standards would this be OK for you, if ever?

I don't mind promotional content so much, as long as it's optional.

The Fast and Furious Forza Horizons standalone promo was fine by me.

I heard the spicy italian was a hit during the time of new years, Subway must have paid millions for this deal.

I want to push a little bit of focus on advertisements in free to play games.
What do you think is a hit, and what a miss?

If it stops me from playing in order to watch the advert, then it's a no-no.

If it's a banner, that's not too obtrusive, then fine.

I don't mind ads in games as long as it's not a pop-up style video ad. Like a little box in the lower right of the screen on the menu is fine. Having banners on the side of the court is fine. Having any sort of pop-up that could disrupt gameplay/immersion, not cool.

Some of the locations you could be asked to drive people to were literally KFC and Pizza Hut.
