Author Topic: How do you guys make a game fun again?  (Read 2677 times)

When you have beaten a game so many times, and know it like the back of your hand, how do you make it fun again? These games will forever be in my top 10 favorite games, however I struggle every time I try and replay them. I struggle to stay interested as I ALWAYS know what is coming and what to expect:

Super Mario World
Legend of Zelda: OOT
Skyrim
Etc.

I tend to make it halfway through the game and then put it down. It's hard because a couple months later, I'll get the urge to play them again, and then repeat the cycle. I am getting that urge again lately to play OOT, however I am telling myself not to play it in hopes that when I do decide to play it, I will find more entertainment once more and not quit when I reach the Forest Temple.

Opinions?

It's like trying to play DooM, Quake or Half-Life, I usually challenge myself to see how fast I can blaze through everything or set a challenge like no kills, minimal jumps, etc.

if your on PC, modding is the best way i've found to turn an old game new again

All you can do is wait.

I played Toontown nonstop as a child for about 6 years. After it closed and Toontown Rewritten came out, I felt less of an urge to play it since I had been playing for so long.

do new challenges for yourself, such as melee only in a mostly range-based game, or speedrunning.

if you haven't played it for long enough, you'll probably still remember it but more of an "ahh yeah i remember that!!" kind of thing instead of "yeah yeah i know that already this sux"

Try messing around with glitches and cheat codes and whatnot.

Experience it with a friend who is equally knowledgeable or vastly unaware of the game.

break it
take the engine to it's limits
crash that stuff with sheer stupid shenanigans

with a game like LoZ challenge yourself.
Do a no heart run
Try to speedrun it

What I do if i pick up a Final Fantasy game i've beaten a few times i challenge myself, like the 122333 challenge for 12

You could try seeing how far you can get in the game without dying once.

start a youtube lets play

whenever i grow bored of a game (usually if i finish it), i replay it, this time trying to find as many glitches as possible before i finish again, bonus points for bugs that break the game or destroy saves

Do what you're doing. Ignore the game and give it a very long time (we're talking years). Nostalgia factor and forgetfulness will come in handy.

If you'd like, you could search on tvtropes, TCRF or other Internet places to research the game and find out interesting stuff about it. That's about the same kind of fix without the disappointing quit half way through the game.
